What is an ECU?

All modern vehicles on the road today have an ECU (Engine Control Unit). The ECU can be described as the vehicles ‘brain’ and contains a processor that takes information from various sensors throughout the engine and analyses information such as the engine temperature, accelerator pedal angle, oxygen content in the burnt exhaust gases as well as many more parameters. Using the information from these sensors it can then manage the fuel quantity, fuel mix, timing and a whole range of other parameters to maintain optimum performance, economy and emissions etc. What is ECU Remapping? When a manufacturer develops a new vehicle they have to take into consideration all of the conditions it may be subjected to in all of the global regions in which they intend to sell this model. This means instead of just optimising the ECU’s program or ‘mapping’ to deliver the best performance, or the most fuel efficiency, they have to make compromises to the map to take into account these differing operating conditions. These could include sub-standard fuels, extremes in temperature and altitude, differing emission laws, tax classes and even the possibility that the vehicle may not be serviced on a regular basis and in accordance with the manufacturers recommended instructions. The manufacturer has to ensure that the vehicle will operate under these conditions even if it means compromising in some areas.

ECU remapping is about adjusting various parameters within the ECU mapping files such as fuel pressure, boost pressure (on turbocharged applications), ignition advance and throttle pedal control amongst others to release the true performance from the engine. It is a completely safe process as it is just giving the engine the performance it should have had in the first place before all the compromises were applied to the original programming. Every engine will have its own unique mapping and by adjusting this we can fine tune the characteristics of the engine to suit your personal needs and wants.

What do you actually do to my vehicle?

Using specialist electronic tools we access the software on the vehicle ECU and adjust the standard operating parameters in the program.

Laptop Remap Merc
OBD Remap – In most cases (typically MY2000 – 2010) the ECU software can be accessed via the on-board diagnostics port (OBD) in the vehicle, normally found under the dashboard.

Bench Remap – In some newer models (typically from MY2010) the ECU will have to be removed from the vehicle to connect directly to our tools and access the ECU software.

Chip Change – In a few older models (typically older than MY2000) the ECU will have to be removed from the vehicle and the processor chip replaced with a new programmable chip. We can then connect and programme the new chip using our advanced tools.

We always run a diagnostic and physical check before we carry out any work in order to ensure to the best of our ability that the vehicle is suitable for a remap. We may refuse to work on a vehicle if we find any existing conditions that need attention, until the problem is fixed.

If for any reason you wish to return your vehicle to its original settings this can be done easily as we always keep a copy of the original software as a backup.

Is ECU remapping legal?

Yes, there is nothing illegal about remapping an ECU on an engine, although you should inform your insurance company of ANY alterations made to your vehicle. If your vehicle is under any vehicle warranty you may also need to inform them. If vehicle warranty causes you a problem we also have alternative electronic tuning solutions, call us for more information.
